Three Beers That I Would Want On a Desert Island

What are your "Stranded on a Desert Island Beers"?

1) I have to start with my favorite beer of All-Time, Sierra Nevada Celebration Ale because it works in hot and cold situations.

2)Then I would need a Stout to keep a nice layer of fat for cold nights and I'd have to say that a particular Milk Stout made by Left Hand that I had in Phoenix last time has moved up to #2 in my cue.

3) Finally, I'd have to say Bud Light, because it is the closest to water and I'd need plenty of that!

What are your Top 3?

NOLA Brown Ale

It’s a New Orleans microbrew…sadly they still don’t bottle it and you can only get it in kegs or mini-kegs.

So tasty.

Thanks to a recent recommendation from JP, I agree the Bear Republic Hop Rod Rye is a must try. He also recommended the Bear Republic Racer 5 IPA, which has quickly become my number one, and that was from bottle. Imagine my glory when it became available on tap – short lived, though it was.

Due to these recommendations:

I will be visiting the Bear Republic Restaurant in Healdsburg today. I have always been a fan of Racer 5 and am looking forward to trying their other offerings. Thanks Gents and Cheers!

1. New England Ghandi-Bot IPA

One of my top-two favorite examples of my favorite beer style.

2. Otter Creek Stovepipe Porter
Dark, smooth and very flavorful – I’d need an option like this for variety.

3. Pacifico
I’m hoping it’s going to be hot on the island, and this one was brewed for it.

Russian River Brewery

The best beer I have had recently is Pliny The Younger (a limited edition triple IPA). I had it at the Hopyard in Pleasaton California. They only get 2 kegs a year and I was lucky enough to have the bartender, Keith, recommend it to me. Pliny The Elder, a double IPA, is good but The Younger is out of this world.

Have heard great things about the brewery

I can vouch for this.

here we go

1. Magic Hat #9 – this would be my go to after working on the abode all day. Goes down smooth yet has some depth to it. Nothing wrong with enjoying a good beer after a hard days work.

2. Allagash Triple – For the days of drinking your sorrows away. Always a favorite when I hit up Euolgy in Philly. Also it will give me the courage to swim home.

3. Southern Tier 2XIPA – I am going to go for another strong one here only because I figure driving is no longer an issue. I love hops and I think they did this one right.

So where is this island and when do we leave?

by Philly O's on Mar 4, 2011 4:07 PM PST reply actions

I like Celebration but

Have you had the Tumbler? Its addictively good

That being said:

1)Yuengling Lager (I live in Philly – its more a right than a privilege)
2) Troegs Mad Elf (For when I want to get really sauced)
3) Stella Artois (I’d consider substituting this with Warsteiner)

by RucanorX on Mar 4, 2011 4:08 PM PST reply actions

I spent the last 3 minutes thinking about it, and I think instead of Mad Elf, I’d go with Chimay Red…really have to work an abbey ale in there and it gets you similarly as sauced

by RucanorX on Mar 4, 2011 4:11 PM PST up reply actions

Right on with the Yuengling

I moved from Philly years ago and can manage without hoagies and cheesesteaks but no Yuengling sucks.
My other two are Shiner Bock and Arrogant Bastard.

Dude

I’m originally from New York / North Jerz and been living in Philly for several years now. The weirdest part is going to bars outside of this area and asking for a ‘Lager’ and they say ‘Which one?’ My puzzled face at that point is priceless

Haha

Yeah I remember the first time I left PA after I was 21, and I had the same experience. “Uhhhh, well Yuengling of course!”

Our list, so far:

NOLA Brown Ale - Regional to new Orleans
Newcastle – Newcastle, ENG – International
Bear Republic Hop Rod Rye – Healdsburg, CA – International/Regional
Great Lakes Edmund Fitzgerald Porter – Cleveland, Ohio – Regional

by Ron Brasil on Mar 4, 2011 4:58 PM PST reply actions

Pilsener Urquell – Pilsen, Czech Republic (the company is owned by Miller but it is from the home of pilsener). It tastes amazing, I don’t know how the Czech’s do it but they make seriously good beer!

Adnams Bitter – Southwold, England. I got an opportunity to go to the brewery and it was seriously good. It’s an ale so it’s meant to be warm so there’s no problem with cooling it!

Staropramen – Prague, Czech Republic. I’m from England and this is the best lager on tap in a lot of pubs so I put it down because it would remind me of home!

As a college student that recently turned 21 I think this blog might be just what I need.

Beer to try:

McSorely’s- I think it’s based out of NYC. It’s kinda dark but I liked the taste. I think you can get it anywhere in NY since I’m from upstate and it was sold there.

…hopefully I don’t need to do much hunting on this island, cuz I’d be quite drunk most of the time. Fishing might be possible, if we’re talking about the “sit in the boat and drink all day and hope you catch something” sort of fishing. Spearfishing couldn’t possibly end well.
